The second generation of the seven-seat model Mercedes-Benz GL (factory index X166) was introduced in April 2012 at the New York Auto Show. And in November 2015 appeared restyled version of the car under the new designation GLS, where "S" indicates the status of the flagship in the brand hierarchy.
SUVs can be recorded as competitors of the Mercedes-Benz GLS range rover, Lexus LX And Infiniti QX80.
In the second generation, the body length of the Mercedes-Benz GL has grown to 5130 mm (+42 mm), width - up to 1934 mm (+14 mm), and height - up to 1850 mm (+10 mm). The wheelbase has not changed - all the same 3075 mm. The restyled model with the GLS designation received new teardrop-shaped headlights with integrated LED running lights, a more embossed hood, as well as a different front bumper and grille with an enlarged logo. At the back, the pattern of the lamps has changed, and in the cabin, a “tablet” of the multimedia system has appeared on the front panel, to which a touchpad on the central tunnel relies as an additional option.
The main innovation in terms of technology - instead of a 7-speed "automatic" on the GLS SUV, they began to install a new nine-speed 9G-Tronic, which the Germans had previously begun to install on the GLE family (GLE SUV And GLE Coupe ). The new transmission is combined with a V6 3.0 diesel engine (258 hp, 620 Nm) on the GLS 350 d 4MATIC, a V6 3.0 petrol engine (333 hp, 480 Nm) on the GLS 400 4MATIC and a V8 4.7 petrol (455 hp) ., 700 Nm) on the GLS 500 4MATIC. On the sports AMG version of the 63 4MATIC, the 7G-TRONIC PLUS SPEEDSHIFT AMG automatic transmission and the V8 5.5 engine (585 hp, 760 Nm) were used.
The company also noted that the reformed Mercedes-Benz GLS has become even more comfortable thanks to the new ADS Plus adaptive shock absorbers with stepless change in characteristics for road conditions. By default, the car is equipped with Airmatic air suspension (clearance in the upper position reaches 306 mm) and, optionally, an Active Curve Control active anti-roll bar. Finally, the Dynamic Select system now offers a choice of six driving modes: Comfort, Slippery (“Ice”), Sport (“Sport”), Individual (“Individual”) and Offroad (“Off-road”).
The Mercedes-Benz GLS is produced at the Daimler plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA.
