Mercedes S class - rear or all-wheel drive executive class sedan, the flagship of the brand. Seventh generation (W223) submitted in September 2020.

Design

The new generation of the S-Class retains the defining design features of its predecessor, but adds a lot of new features, such as retractable door handles and triangular taillights, as well as an all-new grille and headlights. Thanks to more streamlined forms, the sedan not only changed in appearance, but also improved its aerodynamics. Thus, the aerodynamic drag coefficient Cx of the 223rd was only 0.22 - one of the best indicators in the class.

Dimensions

The flagship Mercedes has grown a lot. The length of the base sedan has reached 5210 mm (94 mm more than the previous model W222). It is also surprising that the new standard S-Class is only 20 mm shorter than the long-wheelbase sedan of the previous V221 series. And the elongated S-Class V223 is already 5320 mm long. The value of the wheelbase is 3106 and 3216 mm, respectively. The width at the transition from the sixth to the seventh is increased by 55 mm (up to 1954 mm), and the height - by 9 mm (up to 1503 mm). Trunk volume has grown from 530 to 550 liters.

Interior

A key highlight of the interior is the new architecture of the front fascia, where the virtual instrument panel and multimedia system display are two separate elements. The second-generation MBUX complex is controlled via a 12.8-inch vertical touchscreen with haptic feedback, which completely replaces the traditional center console. It combines the management of acoustics, microclimate and other functions of the car.

Up to three screens are available in the rear, depending on equipment. From the rear seats, you can now select and change destinations in the navigation system, the electronic assistant has learned to recognize up to 20 movements, and the voice assistant listens even more carefully and understands passengers even better: the activation keyword “Hey, Mercedes” is no longer needed, the system knows 27 languages ​​and understands indirect speech, answers not stereotypically and is able to maintain a dialogue. In addition, two projection screens are available for the configurator, including augmented reality color content for easier navigation.

Comfort and Options

Contour lighting now surrounds the backs of all seats, extends through the front panel and doors, with each 16mm block in the lighting system made up of 250 LED elements. They can change color when the temperature in one part of the cabin changes, synchronize with the speech of the on-board assistant, give a red signal in case of emergency braking or lane keeping, and also when you try to open the door dangerously close to a passing car or cyclist. Thanks to ten times the brightness of the illumination, the backlight is visible even on a sunny day. 

New rear seats received even more adjustments and a new system of massagers. There are a total of five seating options to choose from, which include a three-seat sofa and optional split chairs with retractable ottomans and heated necks. The most technologically advanced seats have 19 electric motors each to adjust the shape of the cushion and backrest to the figure of the passenger. The basic two-zone climate control is equipped with 17 electric motors for adjusting airflow, and the four-zone “climate” has 20 more motors added in the rear of the cabin.

Technology and security

One of the main technological innovations - the S-class W223 received a fully controlled chassis in two versions. In the first case, electric actuators are able to turn the rear wheels at an angle of up to 4.5 degrees, and in the second - by 10 degrees. As a result, the turning circle was reduced by as much as two meters: even the long-wheelbase version of the Eski can turn around in a section with a diameter of less than 11 meters. At the same time, at speeds above 60 km / h, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front ones.

In the initial version, the sedan has a conventional air suspension, and for an extra charge, an active hydropneumatic suspension E-Active Body Control is offered as in the GLE and GLS crossovers, which runs on a 48-volt electrical system and is able to control each wheel separately. Moreover, it is responsible not only for comfort - in combination with the Pre-Safe Impulse Side complex, the suspension can raise the body by 80 mm in a fraction of a second before an inevitable side collision and thereby reduce the risk of injury to the driver and passengers.

Engines and transmissions

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class debuted in several versions with inline six-cylinder engines. Mercedes-Benz S 350 d received a 2.9 turbodiesel (286 hp, 600 Nm) - this is the only version that can be rear- or all-wheel drive, the rest are exclusively all-wheel drive. On the S 400 d modification, the turbodiesel develops 330 hp. and 700 Nm. The S 450 variant is a 3.0 petrol turbo engine (367 hp, 500 Nm), while in the S 500 modification it is boosted to 435 hp. and 520 Nm. In addition, both petrol S-Classes have a 48-volt EQ Boost starter-alternator that adds 22 hp when starting off. and 250 Nm. The gearbox for all is a nine-speed “automatic” 9G-Tronic.

Later, the range will be supplemented by modifications with V8 and V12 engines, as well as hybrid versions. In addition, there will be a luxurious version of Maybach and armored versions of the Guard.

Where is produced

The Mercedes Benz S-Class W223 is produced in Germany at Factory 56, which is located in Sindelfingen. Serial production started in September 2020.
